I saw The Outrun on starring Saoirse Ronan (not WITH her as Sally pointed out:)). Subject is alcoholism so not for everyone. I loved it though and as it is mostly set in The Orkneys the scenery was beautiful.

Sorry, I couldn't resist :))

I quite fancy The Outrun so I might take my mum as I get 2 free cinrma tickets a month with my Sky package.

We saw Megalopolis last night and it was marvellously, marvellously insane. Actually laugh out loud mad. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was rammed with beautiful, improbable scenes, huge wodges of Shakespeare (Adam Driver doing pretty much all of the 'to be or not to be' soliloquy :love2: ), glorious costumes and weird animation. I mean, it also had numerous faults and was sometimes incredibly awful, but it was a Thing of Great Something. :mog: I loved it.

I saw The Substance at the weekend. Too long and way over the top at the end (although reviews from fans of body horror that I have subsequently seen seem to disagree) but asks good questions about beauty and aging, and there was one scene (not horror) that felt so true I found it more difficult to watch than all the blood and gore scenes.

I think if it hadn't been made by a female director there would be questions about the objectification of the younger version of the main character.

Is that the Demi Moore film Montana? I quite fancy that.

We went to a documentary called The Wild North made by a Dutch cameraman, filming plankton, orcas, puffins and blue finned tuna. I was amazed at how much I understood but also forgot that I’m a bit afraid of some things in the sea, so had to shut my eyes at some bits

So Demi Moore body horror film that’s had people walking out? Fine doesn’t bother me. Atlantic Wolffish? No thank you (google at your peril)

Yes, that's the one, Hazey! I can't decide if the fact that DM looks so amazing at the age of 61 reinforces the film's message, or works against it.

:fish: I will definitely not be googling the scary fish! :fish: :bob:

I saw The Substance this weekend too - I was disappointed at how little it had to say, and also found the objectifying gaze quite uncomfortable, given this. My friend got upset over the laughter directed at the final character, and felt it really wasn't a film made by someone who liked women.

Which scene, Montana?

I am on a movie roll atm, I enjoyed Lee but the best thing I've seen recently is Kneecap, about a Belfast hip hop group who rap in Gaelic - really recommend this, lots of humour.

The London film festival starts this week and I’ve got tickets to six films over the next 10 days. I was being restrained. I haven’t even heard of Megalopolis though! It sounds right up my street.

ETA just been reading about why I haven’t heard of it, so that makes more sense!

I am surprised you hadn't heard of Megalopolis! It's been enthusiastically panned for weeks now.

Will you get The Room Next Door at your film festival? I am looking forward to that.

absley has reminded me we also saw Lee recently, which I thoroughly enjoyed. It wasn't perfect, but it was very, very good. I do love a bit of Kate Winslet and her fabulous hips.

I am surprised too, bats! I don’t think I’m seeing the Room Next Door. I wanted to but it’s showing on my mum’s birthday and she’s sharing it as a joint party with my niece, so couldn’t really slope off! I will be seeing the new Mike Leigh though.

I'm not sure if this counts but my friend and I went to see Ghostbusters last night as it's the 40th anniversary. Seeing it on the big screen was a real treat (I was just old enough to watch the sequel in cinemas, but not the first).

Oh how lovely!

I saw it at the cinema when it came out, we sat in the first row at Bristol Odeon. Despite seeing it 200+ times since, I’ve never seen it since on the big screen. Two years ago I went to see Alien and Aliens at the cinema and it’s such a different experience.

Ok, just watched the first of my LFF showings, which was All of Me, which was co-written by and starred (my husband) Brett Goldstein and Imogen Potts ans the other lead. It anlso has Zawe Ashton in it

It’s a slightly dystopian romantic drama, and both a funny and slightly heartbreaking watch. Essential about love and relationships but also how we make hooves, when we stay, when we go and what we give up in both cases.

It’s a bit weird as I wanted a drink after the showing and I’ve managed to sit right next to the after show party in the bar, which definitely makes me look like a fan/stalker, and Brett is standing literally 10 meters away right in my eyeline. I will not make a fool of myself…

My second festival film was (Sir) Steve McQueen’s Blitz. I laughed and cried and laughed and then cried some more. It was, I think, really well done. I think it moved me particularly because of the film being from a black/mixed race kid’s perspective, so the unsurprising encounters with racism and bigotry - in the midst of the other parts of the story that I won’t spoil - pulled on my emotions. And the other key perspective is of from a woman’s POV, which was A bit different in a war film. Apart from that I liked how some of the well known (tragic) events of the blitz were incorporated, and they did a good job of rendering wartime London architecture.

Even though I knew Paul Weller was in it (calling Hazey!!!) I had to double take that it wasn’t Jeremy Irons (which someone sitting behind me also thought it was). He was quite good, although the only bits that weren’t as believable for the period perhaps was some of the music (sounded a bit too contemporary), but that’s a minor quibble. Nice cameos from Kathy Burke, Benjamin Clementine and Steven Graham.

I love going to see classic films on the big screen - my local Picturehouse does them for £5 for members and Mr P and I go a lot. It was a toss up between 10 Things I Hate About You and Chinatown a couple of weekends ago, and we went for Chinatown (as I had never seen it and I saw 10 Things on the big screen a couple of years ago). Chinatown was very good, even if Faye Dunaway's eyebrows were very overplucked, and I could genuinely see why Jack Nicholson became a star.

ETA: a couple of friends went see Blitz at the LFF and they thought really highly of it as well Epp. I want to see it.

I hope you enjoy it, Annabella!

Yesterday’s film was The Summer Book, an adaptation of the novel by Tove Jansson. I mainly chose this one as Glenn Close is in it (aged very believably with makeup/prosthetics) and she didn’t disappoint, though I’ve not actually read the book. I will now though. It’s a lovely peaceful film, the landscape (set in Finland on an island) and nature is a huge aspect of it, and the score worked really well with it. There’s not a huge amount of dialogue even. Just a simple story centred around relationships, tinged with sadness/grief, but quite beautiful.

Sleb encounter of the day was me sitting six feet from Lily Collins whose husband directed the film. He was sat across the aisle from me (it was the world premiere, no Glenn sadly!) and she was next to him. She is even teeny tinier IRL! Apparently others from Emily in Paris was there as was Gary Oldman but I didn’t spot them at the time.

Oh I absolutely LOVE The Summer Book, and had no idea there was a film adaptation. 100% recommend reading it, Epp.

Very good celeb spotting too!

When Evil Lurks - it's an Argentinan horror and technically a sequel to Terrified. It's brilliant, quite gory, a few jump scares and feels very real. I should give a warning if you don't like scenes involving children (there's two horrific ones) and animals. It's really well paced and has some scares you don't see coming.
